Ice or Snow Track Races

Ice or Snow Track Races

Racing on snow or ice is inspired by traditional Indigenous foot races, often held during winter gatherings or celebrations. For more information on Indigenous winter games, visit https://indigenouspeoplesatlasofcanada.ca/article/games-and-sports/

What you do:

  1. Mark a short race track in the snow.
  2. Have children line up and race to a finish line, either running, sliding in snowshoes, or hopping on one foot.
  3. Time each child or have multiple heats for fun.
  4. Encourage cheering and reflection on techniques to move efficiently in snow.

What you need:

  1. Snow-covered flat area for a track
  2. Optional snowshoes
  3. Warm clothing, gloves, and boots

Safety considerations:

Ensure the track is free from rocks, ice patches, or other hazards. Supervise races to prevent collisions or falls. Encourage safe, careful movement, especially when snowshoes are used.
