Newcomer Nature Leader Seasonal - Contract Position

SaskOutdoors is accepting proposals for a Newcomer Nature Leader seasonal contract position.

Are you passionate about outdoor education in Saskatchewan? Do you have experience working with newcomer communities? Are you excited about leading new Canadians in nature interpretation, and mentoring them to become nature ambassadors? SaskOutdoors welcomes applicants to apply for this contract in the Wynyard area. 

SaskOutdoors is offering an 8-week program in nature interpretation for newcomers to Canada. Participants will need basic knowledge of English. The contractor will lead nature interpretation hikes in varied ecosystems in grasslands, ravine and marsh ecology, etc. After each nature walk, participants will be coached on ‘how to,’ e.g. how to plan a nature experience, how to connect to nature through story, and how to offer opportunities for intercultural learnings. At the end of the program, participants will be challenged to lead a short nature walk, in English or their native tongue, sharing their new learnings of Saskatchewan’s flora and fauna and connecting these to memories and stories of their country of origin.

SaskOutdoors recognizes relevant skills and knowledge can be gained through volunteer and life experiences as well as professional and educational backgrounds. Please outline in your cover letter how you have gained the following experiences, and how you would apply them to this role:

  • Knowledge and ability to teach environmental education and nature connections in an (urban) wilderness environment.
  • Communicating with participants, answering questions, scheduling programming, logistics planning, obtaining permits, etc. 
  • Well-practiced in communicating effectively with a high level of professionalism with English as an additional language participants.
  • Experience working with newcomers, preferably in an outdoor setting.
  • Ability to facilitate both nature interpretation and foster cross-cultural connections.
  • Skilled in problem-solving and supporting learners of varying abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, and multitask under deadlines.
  • Personal commitment to equity and inclusion in the outdoors
  • High level of cross-cultural competence. 
  • SaskOutdoors works with learners and partners from a diversity of communities and backgrounds. We continuously seek to engage with Indigenous and Métis partners, original stewards of our shared Treaty land.
  • Passionate about outdoor pursuits, and a desire to help get new Canadians outdoors for transformative experiences.

Location: east-central Saskatchewan, Wynyard area

Contract Dates: May - June, 2024 (Contract position for 7 weeks)

Wage: $25.00-$30.00 per hour (negotiable based on experience)
Hours: Approximately 25 hours per month (evening and weekend work is required)

Other requirements: A current First Aid certification and a Criminal Record Check.

Outdoor Education Summer Student

SaskOutdoors is accepting applications for an Outdoor Education Summer Student position for 8 weeks of full time employment starting in early July 2024.  Pay for this position will be $14.00 - $15.00 per hour.  To be eligible for this Canada Summer Jobs funded position applicants must be eligible to work in Canada, be 15-30 years of age on the start date of employment, and be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have been granted refugee status.

The selected youth will participate in and assist with various SaskOutdoors initiatives, including creating social media content, supporting staff at SaskOutdoors events, facilitating Get Outside Kids Club activities, managing and creating Outdoor Kits, and mentoring on the SaskOutdoors Board of Directors. This position will primarily be based in Saskatoon and the surrounding area. This position may involve other opportunities and duties to match the skills of the individual and the needs of SaskOutdoors. The selected youth will work remotely using their own home office and equipment. The youth will also be expected to plan and/or attend various events throughout the work term.  Minimal travel may be required.

Curriculum-EcoSchools Integration Specialist - Contract Position

SaskOutdoors is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to assist with a SaskOutdoors and EcoSchools project. This position involves creating cross reference guides between the Saskatchewan Curriculum and EcoSchools action cards to support environmental education initiatives across Saskatchewan. The successful candidate will work approximately 120 hours, with a flexible hourly rate between $25 to $30. This contract position starts as soon as possible and is required to be completed before June 30th, 2024. Training and ongoing support will be provided.

Responsibilities include the development cross reference guides between the Saskatchewan Curricula and the approximately40 EcoSchools action cards.  Each action card referencing will require approximately 3 hours of work. 

Prospective applicants must submit their applications by April 26th. The position's start date is immediate. Residence in Saskatchewan is a requirement. Preference will be given to candidates who are currently enrolled in an education program or have an educational background. The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively is essential.
