Stick Pull
This traditional game is played to develop grip strength and coordination, often using sticks or poles in snow or on ice. For more information on Indigenous winter games, visit https://www.aboriginalperspectives.uregina.ca/workshops/workshop2011/stickpull1.shtml
What you do:
- Find a soft, safe area of snow
- Provide each child with a stick.
- Two children hold a stick at opposite ends and try to pull it away from each other.
- Alternate pairs and encourage children to notice strategies for grip and leverage.
- Celebrate effort, not just winning.
What you need:
- Sticks or short poles of equal length
- Snow-covered flat area
- Warm clothing, gloves, and boots
Safety considerations:
Ensure sticks are smooth and free of sharp points. Supervise children to prevent falls or accidental poking. Avoid icy surfaces that could increase slipping hazards.
Benefits:
- Spiritual: Connects children with traditional Indigenous movement games.
- Emotional: Encourages resilience, cooperation, and sportsmanship.
- Physical: Builds hand and arm strength, coordination, and balance.
- Intellectual: Develops problem-solving, strategy, and observation skills.
