Snow Snake

Snow Snake

Snow Snake is a traditional Indigenous game played by several First Nations, where children slide long wooden sticks along snow to see whose goes the farthest. It builds strength, focus, and friendly competition. What you do:

  1. Find a long, flat, packed snow track.
  2. Provide each child with a smooth, straight stick (the “snow snake”).
  3. Take turns throwing or sliding the stick along the track, aiming for maximum distance.
  4. Measure or mark distances and celebrate each child’s throw.
  5. Encourage children to practice technique and adjust their throws for better results.

What you need:

  1. Straight sticks, approximately 1–1.5 meters long
  2. A long, flat snow track
  3. Warm clothing, gloves, and boots

Safety considerations:

Ensure the track is free of rocks, ice, or obstacles. Supervise children to avoid collisions when throwing or sliding sticks. Keep children a safe distance from each other during turns.

Benefits:

  • Spiritual: Connects children with traditional Indigenous culture and outdoor play.
  • Emotional: Encourages patience, confidence, and healthy competition.
  • Physical: Promotes arm strength, coordination, and balance.
  • Intellectual: Develops focus, strategy, and observation as children refine their technique.
