Hidden Winter Treasures

Hidden Winter Treasures

What You Do:

  1. Gather small, colorful objects like scarves, wooden blocks, plastic animals, or small painted rocks.
  2. Before the activity, hide these objects in the snow, making some easier to find and others more challenging.
  3. Provide the children with small shovels, spoons, or their hands to dig and uncover the treasures.
  4. Encourage them to use careful digging techniques like an archaeologist would.
  5. (Optional) Re-hide the objects and let the kids take turns creating treasure maps or giving clues.

What Do You Need?

  1. Colorful objects to hide (scarves, wooden blocks, small toys, painted stones, etc.)
  2. Small shovels, spoons, or hands for digging
  3. A designated play area with snow
  4. (Optional) A clipboard and paper to make a simple "treasure map"

Safety Considerations:

Ensure the hiding area is free of sharp objects, ice patches, or deep snow that could pose a hazard. Use non-toxic, eco-friendly items in case anything is left behind. Dress warmly with gloves, hats, and waterproof boots to prevent cold-related injuries. Supervise children to ensure they do not dig too deep or disturb natural habitats.

Benefits:

Physical: Improves fine motor skills through digging and handling small objects. Encourages movement and coordination as children search for treasures. Builds endurance and strength while playing in the snow.

Intellectual: Develops problem-solving skills as children figure out where objects might be hidden.  Introduces early mapping skills if using a treasure map. Sparks an interest in archaeology and scientific exploration through careful digging techniques.
