Ice Treasure Hunt
Finding Treasure in Ice
Cool off on a warm summer day by becoming an ice explorer and discovering hidden treasures frozen inside blocks of ice. This creative outdoor activity encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and sensory exploration while learning about melting, water, and the science behind ice.
What you need
- Large ice blocks made by freezing water in containers
- Small natural treasures frozen inside (flowers, leaves, sticks, pine cones, rocks, shells, or small nature objects)
- Warm water in spray bottles, cups, or squeeze bottles
- Small tools such as spoons, craft sticks, or toy hammers
- Salt (optional)
- Magnifying glasses (optional)
- Towels or trays
- Containers to collect the treasures
What you do
- Collect small natural treasures from the outdoors (only collect items where it is allowed and avoid harming living plants).
- Place the treasures in containers filled with water and freeze them ahead of time.
- Bring the frozen treasure blocks outside on a warm summer day.
- Examine the ice and make predictions about what is hidden inside.
- Use warm water, salt, sunlight, or tools to carefully melt and break through the ice.
- Experiment with different methods and observe which ones help release the treasures fastest.
- Collect and sort the treasures once they are freed.
Safety Considerations:
Use only safe, smooth objects inside the ice blocks and avoid freezing anything sharp or hazardous. Supervise children when using tools to chip away at the ice and remind them to use gentle movements. Warm water should be comfortable to touch and not hot enough to burn. Melting ice can create slippery surfaces, so complete the activity on grass, gravel, or a towel-covered area to prevent slips. Make sure participants stay hydrated and protected from the sun during hot weather. Respect nature by collecting responsibly and returning any living items or natural materials when finished.
