Thank You for your support: 2019 iGen Sherbrooke Intergenerational Camp
We are so grateful for the $500 operations grant that we received from the Saskatchewan Outdoor and Environmental Society. This grant went toward subsidizing our 2019 Intergenerational camp experience for iGen students and Elders at Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon.
Because we had an intergenerational group participating in two days of activities, we needed a secure indoor space for materials, cooking and shelter if weather was inclement. The Pike Lake Rec hall fit the bill perfectly and we used $250 of our grant to pay for its rental. Here is our group making a newspaper fashion design then showing their creations off in a mock fashion show. The Rec Hall allowed students and Elders to use newspaper on a windy day in a comfortable and sheltered space.
We were also able to offer a natural clay pottery workshop in the Rec Hall. We hired potter Vanessa Guest to come and lead our intergenerational group through an art experience. Elders and students dug their hands in, laughed and chatted, and experimented with a variety of cool tools and textures inspired by Vanessa. The other $250 of our grant covered Vanessa’s workshop fee.
We had many nature activities going on at our camp. Some of them were for the intergenerational group and others were just for the grade six iGen students.
Pond dipping, a scavenger hunt, and campfire time were enjoyed by all. Another hit was the intergenerational drumming circle that we formed on day two.
The students slept in tents and went technology free for the duration of the camp. They also collected their own cooking sticks for the evening meal, did an orientation session with traditional compasses, and went on the Pike Lake nature trail to connect with the land.
Thank you again for supporting our outdoor camping adventure at Pike Lake in May of 2019. Your support allowed us to create a safe and comfortable experience for students and Elders alike while they came and went from activities and shared art and drama.
