Flower Shop

Flower Shop

The Flower Shop is a nature-based dramatic play experience where children create, sort, and “sell” flowers and natural materials outdoors. It encourages creativity, storytelling, and connection to the natural world through imaginative role play.

What  Do You Need?

  1. Natural loose parts (fallen flowers, leaves, grasses, pinecones, sticks)
  2. Baskets, crates, or bins
  3. Play money or tokens (optional)
  4. Small tables, tarps, or stumps for display areas
  5. Signs, paper, and pencils
  6. Clipboards (optional for “orders”)

What Do You Do?

  1. Set up an outdoor “shop” space using natural and loose parts.
  2. Collect only fallen materials—nothing living is picked.
  3. Arrange flowers and natural items for display and sorting.
  4. Role play as shopkeepers and customers.
  5. Create pricing, “orders,” and storytelling around the shop.
  6. At the end, return all natural materials back to the environment and pack away all loose parts following Leave No Trace principles.

Safety Considerations:

Ensure children only collect fallen natural materials and avoid disturbing plants, insects, or wildlife habitats. Check the area for hazards such as thorns, sharp sticks, or allergic plants before starting. Remind children not to put natural materials in their mouths and to wash hands after play. Keep pathways clear to avoid tripping hazards around the shop setup and ensure all materials are returned to their natural setting afterward.

Benefits:

Physical: Supports fine motor skills through sorting, arranging, carrying, and handling natural materials.
Emotional: Encourages imaginative play, confidence, and positive social interaction through role play.
Spiritual: Builds a sense of gratitude and connection to nature through respectful use of natural materials.
Intellectual: Develops early math, communication, and problem-solving skills through pricing, sorting, and storytelling.
