Make Your Own Tree
Children explore creativity and the natural world by making their own trees using sticks, leaves, stones, and other natural materials. This activity encourages imagination, problem-solving, and connection to the land.
What you do:
- Collect natural materials such as sticks, leaves, stones, bark, or moss.
- Use a large stick or branch as the trunk, and arrange other materials to create branches, leaves, and roots.
- Build the tree on the ground, a flat surface, or a shallow pit in the soil.
- Encourage children to experiment with shapes, textures, and patterns.
- Discuss how trees grow, their parts, and their role in the ecosystem.
What you need:
- Sticks, leaves, stones, bark, moss, or other natural materials
- Flat outdoor surface or patch of soil
- Optional: small container or tray to hold loose materials
Safety considerations:
Check the area for sharp sticks, rocks, or debris before play. Ensure children handle materials gently and avoid lifting items that are too heavy. Encourage respectful interaction with the environment, following Leave No Trace principles, returning materials to where they were collected, and leaving plants, animals, and soil undisturbed outside the samples being used.

Intellectual-develop creativity, planning, and problem-solving skills.
Emotional-encourages self-expression, focus, and satisfaction from creating something unique.
