Leaf Sculptures
Throughout history, people have used natural materials like leaves, bark, and grasses to make costumes and masks for festivals and ceremonies. The book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert is a wonderful example of turning leaves into imaginative characters and scenes, inspiring children to create their own leaf sculptures.
What do you do:
- Collect large leaves on the ground.
- Use them to design hats, masks, or playful pieces of “armor” by layering and attaching the leaves together with sticks, string, or even just by tucking them into clothing.
- Children can role-play, put on a leaf parade, or create characters inspired by the book Leaf Man and their own imagination.
What do you need:
- Oversized leaves gathered outdoors
- Optional string, tape, or safety pins to attach leaves
Sticks, twigs, or small branches for structure
Paper and crayons if children want to sketch designs first

Safety considerations
Avoid using leaves from plants that may cause irritation, such as poison ivy. Check for bugs before handling leaves. Supervise when using pins, tape, or scissors to attach leaves. Remind children not to block their vision completely if making masks. Only use leaves on the ground, do not break the trees.
Benefits:
Physical: Collecting and assembling leaves promotes fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Walking, bending, and stretching to gather leaves supports gross motor activity.
Spiritual: Encourages children to feel part of the natural world by turning leaves into something playful and expressive. Inspires a sense of gratitude for seasonal changes and creativity drawn directly from the land.
Intellectual: Stimulates problem-solving and design thinking as children figure out how to construct their sculptures. Supports imaginative storytelling and role-play inspired by Leaf Man.
Emotional: Brings joy, laughter, and confidence as children wear and share their creations. Strengthens self-expression and collaboration when building or parading leaf costumes with others.
