Sophia Young - recipient of the 2023 Cydney Weir Award for Youth Environmental Leadership.
Sophia has made remarkable contributions to sparking environmental passion in her community. At her school, Sophia founded and chaired the Miller4Nature Permaculture Club. Sophia has engaged her school community with environmental-based activities, including gardening, jam-making, sacred medicine gathering, farm field trips, sweat ceremonies and more. As a result of Sophia’s leadership, the club has grown to over 60 students with five focus groups (lead team, greenhouse, orchard, permaculture education, and environmental advocacy).
Sophia is currently a youth representative on the City of Regina Community Advisory Group and co-chair of Regina Energy Transition, a local environmental advocacy group. In these roles, Sophia has advocated for public and active transportation initiatives and the development of green spaces. In doing so, Sophia has helped develop the Energy and Sustainability Framework, the City of Regina’s plan to reach near-net zero by 2050.
Sophia continues to be a strong steward of natural spaces and an advocate for people to enjoy them.
Congratulations, Sophia!
