Looking to shake off your hibernation early?
Join SaskOutdoors for our annual winter camp – this year, in the boreal forest fringe of Great Blue Heron Provincial Park!
All skill levels are welcome! Whether you're a complete newcomer to Saskatchewan, camping, or winter, or you’re a seasoned outdoorsperson, we’ve got a comfortable seat for you around the fire.
You’ll have the experienced guides from Sundogs Excursions share their love and in-depth knowledge of the landscape and winter travel with you, while also having the chance to run a dog-team through the mosaic of woods, muskegs and lakes that are the boreal forest.
This is a learn-to event. Look forward to programming that covers the skills of camping and traveling in the seasons of winter and spring transition!
The goal of this camp is for participants to learn the necessary skills to winter camp safely and comfortably so that they may go unassisted the next weekend they choose to indulge in some late-winter fun. We’ll also cover winter-specific Leave No Trace techniques, so your outings can remain low-impact. We want to help you appreciate Saskatchewan’s snowy season and highlight some simple techniques to help you stay warm, dry, and well-fed during winter and early-spring activities. Don’t be surprised if you have a new ‘favourite season’ after this weekend!
Diverse meals will demonstrate various winter camping options, water and wood collection will help crystalize winter camping logistics, and witnessing the gregarious chatter of grey jays in camp will reveal what the quiet magic of winter camping is all about...
The howl of the huskies outside might even be your wilderness lullaby.
Saturday, March 16 – Sunday, March 17, 2019
Meet at Sundogs Excursions (Anglin Lake) at 10:00 am on March 16. Activities begin at 10:30. Dogsledding late-afternoon.
March 17, we’ll focus on breaking camp (after necessary morning beverages and breakfast, of course!) and follow-up with more activities. You’ll be welcome to stick around for lunch and more afternoon programming, or head home at a time that works for you!
