Dec 5, 2015 - Dec 6, 2015
Sask Outdoors and Sask Parks are very excited to offer you a winter camping experience this December! We’ve partnered up and found some amazing sponsors to make this an event you don’t want to miss!
All skill levels are welcome! Whether you're a complete newcomer to Saskatchewan, camping, or winter recreation, or you’re a seasoned explorer, we’ve got a comfortable seat for you around the fire.
This is a learn-to event. The goal of this camp is for participants to learn the necessary skills to winter camp safely and comfortably so that they may go out unassisted the next weekend they choose to indulge in some winter fun. We want to help you appreciate the winter season and highlight some simple techniques to help you stay warm, dry, and well fed during winter activities. Don’t be surprised if you have a new ‘favourite season’ after this weekend!
You'll have three experienced leaders for this event and a lot of support from our sponsors to help get you out there. The location will be Buffalo Pound Provincial Park which provides us with some awesome opportunities for exploring and winter activities.
All food is provided with your $30 registration ($40 for non-members). This includes supper and snacks on Saturday, and snacks, breakfast, and lunch on Sunday. You will be learning to cook simple, winter-friendly camp meals on liquid gas stoves, and also some winter-friendly ways to clean your cold-weather kitchen afterwards.
We are very thankful to have Fresh Air Experience Regina as our retail sponsor, and they have provided us with a fantastic space to do our orientation night on November 25th: their store. We will be looking at some low- and high- tech methods of insulation, sleep systems, shelters, and so on. This orientation night will be for you to ask any questions you may have about the event or your gear. If you are in the Regina area we invite you to come join us in person and participate in the activities and discussion, but if you are at a distance, we will be providing live streaming video for you to watch from home and ask questions as we go. If that doesn't work, or if you'd like to review afterwards, the session will be recorded for you to play back.
We are also thankful to be able to provide gear loan-outs. The Regina Public School Board can loan sleeping bags and pot sets, and Winston Knoll Collegiate can loan tents and stoves, for anyone who doesn't have the kit at hand. Snowshoes will also be provided by the Regina Public School Board if the snow conditions are adequate.
Complete gear lists will be provided.
We will begin check-in on December 5th at 12:00 and start with our activities at 1:00. On December 6th in the morning we will be focusing on breaking camp (after all the necessary snacks, hot beverages, and breakfasts have been had, of course!). Afterwards you have the opportunity to stick around and have some lunch and join in on some more activities, or head on out!
If you can't make it out for the full event, you're invited to come out on Sunday afternoon to join in on the activities. Lots of skills to be learned and fun to be had! (food is not provided to participants on Sunday afternoon, but there is no charge to join in)
Please note that there are no warm-up facilities at this event.
Participants must be 16 years or older, those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or gaurdian.
Waivers, media release, and health inforation forms will be provided by email upon registration.
The 2015 Winter camp is FULL!
