Orienteering for Kids (Spring Session)

Saskatoon, SK
Orienteering for Kids (Spring Session)

Welcome to another orienteering season! This spring SaskOutdoors and the Saskatchewan Orienteering Association will offer an Orienteering for Kids and Youth program in Saskatoon with six sessions (1 session/week) starting the week of April 12. Depending on interest we may offer a second set of sessions in June (information about these sessions will be posted in May).

We will offer the following two levels:

Level 1: Beginners ages 5-9. This level includes games to help kids learn map symbols and cardinal directions. We will also do lots of treasure hunts to help children learn to use a map. We will use a compass to find cardinal directions, but this level will not require children to use a compass while navigating. Parent/guardian participation is mandatory for children under 8 years of age.

Level 2: Children 8 years or older, who have taken level 1 or who have other background knowledge in orienteering. Children who are 10 years or older will have the opportunity to start directly at level 2 even if they are beginners because they are likely to learn the basics covered in level 1 quite quickly and they are old enough to learn to use a compass. In this level we will review map symbols and cardinal directions, but we will focus on learning to navigate more complex terrain using a compass. Parent participation is welcomed, but not required.

The orienteering sessions will be held at Gabriel Dumont Park, Diefenbaker Park and Chief Whitecap Park. The specific location for each week will be sent to registered participants.

In April and May, we will be offering sessions on the following days, but depending on interest we may be able to add sessions:

The registration fee is $65 ($60 for SaskOutdoors members) per child which includes an annual membership ($10) for the Saskatchewan Orienteering Association.  A sibling discount of $10/additonal child is available.  Each child must be registered separately. PLEASE NOTE: if you are registering multiple children for the same dates/time the form will only accept your email address once. If possible please use an alternate email address for each child OR email info@saskoutdoors.org and we will help you out!  If you want to register two or more children in different levels, please register all of them in either level 1 or level 2 for now and send us an email. Depending on how many coaches we have we may be able to run level 1 and level 2 at the same time. Saskatchewan COVID restrictions will be monitored closely and will be followed at all times. Sessions are currently capped at 8 participants, but this may change. When registering, please answer the questions about your availability so that we can make sure that we can accommodate as many families as possible.

Please contact us if you have any questions at orienteering@saskoutdoors.org
