Damsels in Wilderness
Sep 12, 2019 - Dec 12, 2019
We are pleased to work with Wildernook Fresh Air Learning to bring you another innovative outdoor program. The Damsels in Wilderness program is designed for young women ages 10 - 12 (trans and gender-fluid participants welcome!) who crave more outdoor time exploring, connecting with nature and developing their outdoor skills. Whether completing a stewardship project on the shoreline of the South Saskatchewan River, learning valuable navigation skills, or developing leadership skills through team-building challenges, this program provides a unique way to include fresh air wellness time in each week. This program is hosted by SaskOutdoors with facilitation provided by Wildernook Fresh Air Learning.
The Experience: Weekly experiences will be sequenced over the course of the season to develop outdoor skills, build community and to make the most of the fall season. We will also host two daytime experiences at nature sites outside of the city and invite participants for input in the planning of these experiences.
This program is unique because it is lead by experienced female outdoor education teachers who are experts in their fields. They bring years of experience teaching outdoors.
Our Autumn adventures include:
- Trail cycling
- Nature hikes
- Fire building
- Team building challenges
- Contemplative time in nature
We welcome curiosity and enthusiasm, but no previous experience is required in any of these areas.
Times: Thursdays after school or 3:45/4:00p.m. - 5:45 p.m. Our two day experiences will take place on weekends in October and November and will be about five or six hours in length. Note: we will take Halloween off.
Cost: The program cost of $275.00 is calculated at $15.00 for each of the 13 after school sessions and $40.00 for each of the two daytime (about five or six hours in length). If you are a SaskOutdoors member you qualify for a $10.00 discount.
This price includes learning materials, access to the specialized outdoor gear we will be using (not including bikes and helmets) and mentorship from qualified outdoor educators.
Accessibility Pricing: $30.00. SaskOutdoors will subsidize the cost of two participants who identify as Indigenous or newcomers to Canada. The goal of these subsidized spots is to increase the accessibility of the program. Please note, SaskOutdoors would like families making use of this support to follow up with a letter sharing about their experience. Please contact if your family could benefit from one of these subsidized spots.
Requirements: Participants must provide their own water bottle, snack, day pack and rain gear. Access to a bike and bike helmet will be needed for 2-4 sessions. Damsels in Wilderness is an active program and participants should be in good physical condition to enjoy themselves (e.g. able to comfortably run for 15 minutes and walk for 60 minutes).
We welcome curiosity and enthusiasm, but no previous experience is required in any of these areas. Also, specialized gear such as skis and snowshoes will be provided.
Questions? You can email Jana Miller at Registered participants will receive a detailed information package in late August.
