Lumsden Beach Camp Outdoor Adventure Camp 2014

Lumsden Beach Camp initiated a new camp this year with financial help from Sask Outdoors. From August 5-8, 12 teens aged 15-18 participated in an out camp on Lumsden Beach Camp’s land called Outdoor Adventure Camp. Campers participated in a range of regular camp activities such as hiking, swimming, canoeing, and archery, but also took part in a number of special section that focussed on outdoor survival skills as well as ecology. These included sessions on edible wild plants, local birds, fire building and outdoor cooking, slack lining, and canoe over canoe rescue.

The grant sponsored by Sask Outdoors allowed us to hire Joseph Naytowhow to spend an entire day with us. Joseph is a gifted indigenous story teller, musician, outdoor educator and facilitator. During Joseph’s time at the camp he lead a smudge and pipe ceremony, facilitated the construction of a tipi with campers, facilitated a story telling workshop, taught us new songs, and did a miming and image theatre simulation with campers that simulated the residential school experience. The day was impacting and meaningful for all participants and response to Joseph’s presence and programming was overwhelmingly positive.

Thanks again for your generous support and for allowing important outdoor experiences like this to happen.
